After the army withdrew, the government instituted a bounty system, paying farmers for every emu killed. In 1950, they gave farmers half a million rounds of rifle ammunition to kill emus. There are still roughly 700,000 emus, and the farmers just use stronger fences. The emus don't go to Perth itself, because it's dull and the traffic is awful.
